# Can an AI agent receive SMS verification codes in New Zealand?

**Short answer:** Yes: an AI agent with its own New Zealand number can receive SMS verification codes, and with an Agentline NZ 028 number it reads them through the same MCP server or REST API it uses for texting and email. The wait_for_code tool waits up to 55 seconds for a code to arrive by SMS or email and hands it back, but some services won't send codes to business messaging numbers, so it isn't guaranteed to work everywhere.

## How it works

1. The agent enters its Agentline NZ number (+64 28 …) or @agentline.nz address on the sign-up or sign-in form.
2. It calls `wait_for_code`. Agentline NZ scans every inbound SMS and email for a one-time code and returns the newest one that hasn't already been handed out.
3. The agent enters the code to finish.

See [How does wait_for_code get one-time codes for my agent?](/help/how-wait-for-code-works) for the parameters.

## Limits to know about

- We can't guarantee that every third-party service will accept an Agentline NZ number for verification.
- Inbound SMS delivery isn't guaranteed by the carrier, so treat codes as best-effort.
- SMS codes need a plan with a number. Your 028 number is set up within a few days of signup. Your email inbox works straight away. Codes sent by email work with the inbox from day one.
- Check that the service's terms allow an automated agent to hold an account.

## Where not to use it

Use the agent's number for accounts the agent runs itself. Don't make it the recovery number for your personal bank, IRD or other accounts you can't afford to lose access to. Not for emergency communications. It can't reach 111.

## FAQ

### Can the agent use my personal mobile number instead?

It can't read texts sent to your own phone. Giving the agent its own number keeps your personal codes and messages separate from the agent's.

### What if a code doesn't arrive?

Check the service accepts New Zealand numbers and that the number was entered as +64 28 …. Choose email verification if the service offers it, and look in your Agentline NZ dashboard, where every inbound SMS is listed.
